Tonight I have been reflecting on my past repertoire of Jazz standards. In particular, Summertime by George Gershwin. I first learnt this in S1 at the City of Edinburgh Music School (CoEMS) under the direction of Sophie Bancroft. I enjoy this piece: actually I love it. Sophie and I turned it into a funky, upbeat number with a few syncopated rhythms. Whilst it can sound soulful there is basically a positive message in the song i.e. mother and father are watching out for the child. In the current Improv group setting we are doing this number in the swing style. I think this is in keeping with the positivity within the lyrics. I would like to add backing vocals to Jason's leading vocal and play around with it more.
